A ride to the pass street of Sa Calobra may be a real challenge as well as an unforgettable experience. Right after passing the village of Escorca, one can see the abandoned Barracks of the Carrabinieri, standing lonely and forgotten in the middle of the landscape. Once, they had been built in order to control the smuggling traffic to the island. The entrance to the Torrent de Pareis, known as “entre foc”, is also located in the vicinity of Escorca.

The road to Sa Calobra starts right after the viaduct, built in the 19th century. The plans for the road have been designed by the engineer Antonio Pavetti in 1932. It may be interesting to know that it has been constructed without machinery, using only manpower. It overcomes a vertical interval of 800 metres and during its construction it was necessary to remove approximately 31000m³ of rock, which has been mainly used afterwards for the piling up of the road.

The journey is a really thrilling experience, because often one may not recognize where the road - slopes start and where they end. There are tracks which one may perceive as behind oneself, but which in fact are still to be driven over. One of the most spectacular tracks is the passage between two tapering rock walls. The final point of the ride is the, once unattainable, quiet and peaceful Cala Sa Calobra, where nowadays we can enjoy the services of a hotel and of several restaurants. From here, it is worth trying to trek up to the Torrent de Pareis.
