One of the first sceneries the tourists may admire during
the landing on Majorca is the range of mountains called
Tramuntana.
There is only one railway, from Palma to Soller, which crosses
the Tramuntana, while there are for instance, around 8000km
of railways crossing the Alps. However, there are lots of
ecologists claiming that the Tramuntana range of mountains
should be declared a National Park. One of the many reasons
they allege, is the preservation of some menaced animal
species as for instance the “Voltor negre” (Black
vulture) or the “Ferreret”, a little frog.
The Tramuntana has an area of around 1000km² and a
length of approximate 100km and represents the “water
– paradise” of the island. In the 19 villages
which belong to the Serra de Tramuntana, there is a strong
agricultural activity, mainly based on the raise of sheep,
goats and black pigs and on the plantations of almond trees.
In the Majorcan estates, life used to keep its traditional
flavour until more or less 40 years ago.
Valldemossa, Son Marroig, S’Estaca or Sa Calobra
are the typical Tramuntana – locations one should
not miss visiting. On the other hand, those who love hiking
are usually attracted by the magical power of the Island’s
Mountains.
Besides this presentation of Teleweb, you can also watch
a wonderful audiovisual production about the Tramuntana
range of mountains at Costa Nord (Valldemossa), with Michael
Douglas as a main protagonist.
